Are you worried about people or zombies getting you while you repair your vehicle?
Don't just put one item on at a time, if you have the room in your inventory to hold 2 or 3 items,
just scroll wheel put one item on, and repeat that process while the first one is still being installed,
I do this all the time and never have any problems, you can repair a whole car in about 2 to 3 trips to the gear hold.
